The roof will largely made of wood. As a lad I was given a warts & all tour of Salisbury Cathedral which is a comparable building. That has a lot of wooden rafters above ground level.

The fire looks completely out of control. My uneducated guess is the French are going to have to rebuild it.

What the hell are you talking about? You can see firemen all around. It's difficult to get around such a large building to a fire in the middle of the cathedral at the top floors.

This doesn't look like an easy thing to put out.

Reply

You need fire engines and copters to dump water from the air
From my feed, I see lots of bystanders, and I don't see engine cos like you'd see here.
Just a few men standing with a hose on the tower will not put that out.

The Rue de la Cite runs right by there, there are roads
And/or they could access boats putting water on the church from the Seine

Edit I finally see an engine with a hoist on top and a man shooting water upwards, bystanders even admitted the hoses were not strong enough nor the ladders tall enough. 218 pm est

What limey said, have you people not been in old buildings/churches? There are old kinds of wooden structures supporting the "stone" building like the rafters and the roof incorporates wood parts, not to mention everything inside, and if all that goes up, the stone will crack, warp and ultimately come down... it's awful.

Likely an act of Islamist terror (they've been burning and defacing churches all over France, it's just being hushed up by the media) but it could be something connecting with Yellow Vests (who are being brutally suppressed by the French govt. in scenes right out of a third world dictatorship... there is a mainstream media blackout on that as well).

I think the French literally need a revolution, maybe the military can step in like it did in the 1950s when they ended the Fourth (?) republic and put deGaulle back in... I am not kidding.

Reply
superttthero (Apr 15, 2019 - 2:24 pm)

I don't think it's crazy that it was an act of terrorism.

However, as media outlets have reported--and you can clearly see it from the news coverage that pretty much the whole structure covered in scaffolding--the building was undergoing major renovations.

A construction accident/negligence are likely the cause. Again, not that I'd be surprised with your guess.

The cathedral as it was known for thousands of years is probably done. At this point, it's too late to save anything other than artwork. Watching it reminds me how I felt so helpless, watching the Twin Towers hit and going up in flames, knowing nothing could be done to stop the towers from collapse.

Not sure if this fire is due solely to botched renovation. Prosecutors have been called in to investigate. It could have been anything: cigarette butt carelessly discarded ignited fire in area with flammable renovation materials, arson, disgruntled fired renovation or church staff, or--God forbid--really sophisticated, subtle terrorist job.

There was no loss of life (it seems). It's sad, but for me personally, this is far from a "tragedy." Wish this hadn't happened.

This is part of the building's history now. If it survives and is rebuilt in a few hundred years this'll be another page in its book.
