I've never owned dogs, so what does it mean when a dog sniffs only one dude's junk out of a roomful of multiple dudes to choose from?

This happened to me at a quasi working luncheon event at someone's house. The hosts have two Great Dane-sized dogs. At one point when I had a plate in my hand and everyone was gathered around the table admiring the spread, one of the dogs came up and nuzzled his snout really deep into my crotch, making me two inches taller. I wasn't really with people I know, so nobody made any lighthearted or off-color comment. I think everyone tried to pretend it wasn't happening.

At one point in the event before that happened, someone asked: "you're not a dog person, are you?" I pet them, but apparently not enough, or maybe not in the right way, I don't know. Do dogs identify who is not the dog person then just terrify them by showing they can end it all with just one bite?

There were at least six guys there -- why me?

"As when meeting other dogs, strangers receive the most attention of this sort, especially if there is a tinge of sexual scent. People who have had sexual intercourse recently seem to attract this kind of attention from dogs. Women who are menstruating or who have given birth recently (especially if they are still nursing their child) will also often find dogs impolitely sniffing at their genital region."

Man, the dogs are able to smell out residual sperm found in your boxers. I always just treated this as a dog's handshake: Good to meet you, my name is Spike. They won't bite a grown man.

dogs have a special scent gland in their butt, which provides certain olfactory information to other dogs.

Dogs sniff each others' butts for information. They do the same thing to humans, they're all up in your business because they're all up in your business.
