A friend actually told me that this polar vortex is being caused by climate change, which is what we should call global warming now. So, the propaganda is working well.

Not that I don’t believe man is messing up the earth, but good lord you can’t blame everything on it

Sounds like something they would say on NPR.. It’s cold because it’s warm. Ha ha!

Reply
johnsmith (Jan 30, 2019 - 9:23 am)

warmth causes water to evaporate.
When the ocean is warmer, more water evaporates into the air.
moist air causes winter storms.

I believe this was covered in 8th grade earth science.

eagleton (Jan 30, 2019 - 9:27 am)

I’m not talking about winter storms, I’m talking about cold weather. theoretically global warming/ increased atmospheric carbon (climate change for base covering purposes) could cause more precipitation. I don’t understand how it causes cold temperatures

Maybe your eighth grade earth science teacher did not mention about how it can be "too cold to snow," but it is a scientifically factual and even common observation that if it is really cold outside we will not get much snow. The atmosphere must contain moisture to generate snow.. and very cold air contains very little moisture. Being a New Yorker, you have probably observed that some of the coldest days we have are when the sky is completely clear and the sun is shining.

johnsmith (Jan 30, 2019 - 11:47 am)

why don't you google "too cold to snow." My 8th grade earth science teacher stuck to actual science.

Why don't you ask DSE or vohod if it is snowing much (or at all) where they live in the Midwest today?

Teacher should have taught you that significant snowfall is much less likely to occur when the mercury drops well below freezing, especially below 0°F.

Reply
johnsmith (Jan 30, 2019 - 1:58 pm)

because I don't base science on anecdotal evidence.

"Teacher should have taught you that significant snowfall is much less likely to occur when the mercury drops well below freezing, especially below 0°F."

He did. its because cold air lacks moisture. Its not too cold to snow, its too dry to snow.

Reply
plumber (Jan 31, 2019 - 8:34 am)

Well, my point is both anecdotal and scientific: If it is really cold outside, the air will always be too dry for significant snow!

chicagojoe (Jan 31, 2019 - 3:43 pm)

What does that have to do with anything?

Current storm is due to polar vortex weakening and sweeping out, which happens when the pressure containing the vortex is destabilized, which happens more with warmer land temperatures year-round in the northern hemisphere.

plumber (Jan 31, 2019 - 4:14 pm)

Here's another one who believes the "scientific propaganda" about it being colder because it's warmer. Haha!

"Polar vortex" sure sounds fierce. Much fiercer than that lingering lil Nino causing problems again.

What we are having is a spell of cold winter weather, not some polar vortex being swept out with a climate change broom.

Weather is cyclical. No one truly knows what is going to happen one week from the next.

Btw, does anyone else besides me picture the Polar Vortex as that white cloud with a mean face you used to see blowing cold air on the weather maps in old newspapers?

It's remarkably basic science regaring wind and air pressure.

Yet with all their atmospheric tools (the most effective of which is probably just a simple barometer), meteorologists still cannot accurately predict the weather!

Those who study the climate as a science cannot accurately predict what temperatures over the next decade will be like or what will be their cause. They also cannot definitively explain what caused temperatures to warm or cool in the past. They cannot say with any certainty that our climate experiences variations due to abnormal temperatures of ocean water over large areas, solar variations related to sunspot activity, or changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide or ozone content caused by man. Could it not be that it is all purely a matter of chance that a series of events occurring at the right place and the right time can initiate the atmospheric conditions which become the weather? Chances which cause changes to all things over time.. including "deep time."

You can't win with the global warming folks. Everything is related to climate change. Even though the worst hurricanes by far in the US were in the 1930s.

Like when the Hurricane hit Houston and caused all that flooding it was due to climate change. I pointed out that the Hurricane wasn't particularly strong, the flooding was due to an extraordinary lack of movement. The response was that the lack of movement was due to climate change.

Average world temperatures are going up. There is more carbon dioxide. C02 is linked to warmer climates. That's all the information you need.

However, people need stories so they'll just continue to make stories about every weather event, even as it damages their credibilty.

That's tough. If I were planning to off myself, there is no way I would choose freezing to death. I grew up in the North and do not miss the -60 wind chills one bit. We're going to be in the 60s by the weekend and the 70s by next week here.

Hopefully it was something else like a sudden cardiac event that killed him.

We have some seriously science stupid people in this country.

We shifted to climate change because global warming is too narrow a term for what actually is happening because the warming causes things besides a blanket rise in temperature. We also know the mass extinction is in part caused by observable changes to climate, such as the dramatic loss of insect volume. We also know warming oceans causes sea life to die.

Climate change models predict an increase in the frequency of severe storms. It's not like these outlier events happen and scientists blame climate change post-hoc the way athletes thank God only after winning. When empirical reality matches what was theorized decades ago, that's real science, not some scam by hucksters.

And why is it that the guy who buys land using science to determine there is coal underground is a capitalist hero but some guy setting up a business to try and provide goods and services in the face of climate change predicted by science is some kind of evil profiteer?
