Assimilation is racist Brokaw should have gotten the memo months ago.

That's just dumb.

Has anyone actually ever met a Hispanic who grew up in this country as a child and didn't learn English?

It's a made up problem. Everyone who grows up here learns English, it's unavoidable.

Typically the kids speak for the parents from what I saw in schools.
Just my CA experience, the kids have to meet benchmarks in CA schools and learn to speak/write from kindergarten on up. By the time they are older elementary students, they are not only speaking but reading/writing for the parents, if the adults don't speak English.

It's the schools and American tv. Put cartoons in front of children for hours at a time, day after day, and they'll pick it up.

I think a lot of plumber types conflate choosing to speak Spanish with not knowing English.

Correct, choosing to speak Spanish does not mean they can't speak English.
Check out hotel rooms, the maids have on tvs turned to channels broadcast in English all day.
Stay at home mamas also have the tv on all day while they watch the ninos.
What they pick up watching tv, amounts to at least conversational English ability, but they may choose not to know English when it is convenient. Apparently everyone in traffic court needs a translator.

I agree that many immigrant adults don't learn English proficiently and they ought to work at that if they want better job prospects.

However Hispanics who come to this country as children learn English like 99% of the time. People who say otherwise just expose how little famaliarity they have with hispanics. It's a nonexistent problem. What they really mean to ask is "why can't you do more to look like me?"

Yeah my understanding is maybe the first generation never leans English, but their kids become fluent and by the third generation, they might not even learn Spanish at all.

I’ve met some Hispanics born in the U.S. whose English is pretty lousy. Migrant farm workers aren’t the best at making sure their kids get to school and they often go back to Mexico with the kids for months at a time. Makes it really hard for the ESL kids to succeed in school.

They speak with a English-Spanish dialect, much like the French, Irish, Scottish, Italians, and Germans before them. Many of those areas/dialects are still around in this country and it's what makes them unique. People pay good money to visit those places.

Few of us speak the Queen's language anyways, ask limey about the irreparable attrocities we've committed against his native tongue.

He didn’t apologize for saying immigrants should assimilate he apologized for saying Hispanics need to do a better job at assimilating. The issue seems to be that he was conflating Hispanics with immigrants as a whole. Not all Hispanics are immigrants, not all immigrants are Hispanic.

One thing I've noticed with elderly liberal Democrats--they tend to support immigration thinking that immigration today is like the immigration they remember. Like Giovanni coming over from Italy to open a pizza shop. Giovanni will change his name to Johnny, the kids will identify as American and rush not to be "ethnic" or "different." Old people like Brokaw don't generally hang out on Twitter, visit college campuses, etc. When they do, they discover that assimilation is out of fashion these days, and they get really upset and confused--hence Brokaw's rant.

Because these aren’t reflective of the real world.

"The United States was a unique country in which traditional European enemies became assimilated as Americans. But assimilation is no longer emphasized or even permitted. The celebration of diversity and multiculturalism has split the population into victimizer and victimized groups, with hatred of the former taught to the latter. In place of unity, disunity has been created. The American future is not promising."
