Ok guys here goes
Got my business card ready, got the office space ready (250 per month)
Got the business number. Have my printer, scanner, set up to computer
Have CEB online research FREE for one year. I have access to westlaw for citing
Going to launch billboards on 5 locations (high volume restaurants) including indoor displays advertising family law, personal injury, criminal and immigration. I can do most of the smaller stuff and kick out the more complex issues to referral counsel.

Im hoping for 1 lead per month from each billboard, or 5 leads per month. 60 open cases per year.

Good luck my friend. Do you have a web site? What was your total start-up cost (cards, equipment, ect)? Who did you select for credit card processing? Also, did you get malpractice insurance?

I am on the cusp of doing the same and have most everything now, just need to order my scanner and print business cards. Waiting on the results for the Feb 2013 bar to see if I include an additional state bar on my business cards.

No website yet...that comes later. I have virtual office set up. Start up costs are super cheap. 500 bucks for designer...I get business cards, displays, letterhead, billboard design. Still waiting to hear back from printers.

I honestly do not think I'd hire a firm that did not have a website. My .02, which is probably worth a lot less than .02.

We didn't have a website for 10 years and did fine. I threw a cheesy one together a couple of years ago just because. No difference. I don't think people much care when your source of referrals is word of mouth. Word of mouth is 10 times better than any other kind.

I think the internet has a bigger influence now than 10 years ago, but I am sure you can do well without one. In fact, I do know firms that have been very successful without one. I am just assuming that with the type of work a solo does, he'd benefit tremendously from one.

I think it might help for some specialty where you also spend a lot of $$$ to get in the top search results, like "lemon law." But family law, criminal, real estate, etc., nah.... It's easy to get a cheap (even free) basic site. There's nothing wrong with going that route. I sure as heck wouldn't put a sizable chunks of money into a web site.

Those local restaurant billboards will probably do better, and I think he's the one who said he can get them for no rental fees.

There are a few established small-law firms in my part of the world (3-10 lawyers) without websites doing fine, but I imagine it would be hugely helpful for starting your own shop. Especially if you're young and grew up in the Internet age, doesn't look good to be website-less. Squarespace is pretty affordable and user-friendly for throwing a rudimentary "Contact Us" and "Practice Areas" site together.

Can you keep track of what percentage of your business comes thru different avenues and report back to JDU after a year's time? I am sure you ask or flat know how you got some of your clients.

This! I have a good designer and I'm working real hard at avoiding the sleaze issue. I'm not going to be representing Fortune 500 clients but there is some good scratch to be made. The KEY is doing good work to build client base.

I went with vistaprint to start out with, couldn't get a better deal anywhere, 250 biz cards for 10 bucks, a preconfigured website matching the cards (I think like 14 bucks a month), for a few extra bucks to have vistaprint remove their logos.. it's easy to upload pictures and stuff to the website, and there's lots of features to play around with. Obviously, once you get going you can move onto something more sophisticated, but it was the most professional thing i could find on the cheap starting out.
Good luck!
