50k is living large if you are in a small market with no dependents.

It only sucks in NYC, LA, SF, DC, CHI, etc...or if you have to support a family...or service an outrageous amount of debt. Income is all about lifestyle.

cattleprod (Oct 19, 2012 - 11:50 am)

exactly. $50,000 is the median income for a family of 4 in the USA. For many families that $50,000 is with both parents working to reach that level.

For the OP at $50,000 by 27 years old is great. Get married to a spouse that also makes $50,000 per year and you are on a path to a top 20% lifestyle in this country.

Even in one of those cities 50k no debt no dependants can be a very good lifestyle. You just get a sweet place with roommates. I made less than half that taking a year off college and living in one of those cities. Had a great time and still managed to save money to pay for part of undergrad. This is late 90s.

I made 28k the year I was 27, and I would guess my credentials at that point looked better than yours. I know very few people, in big cities or elsewhere, who were making that much, aside from engineers and a few who got into banking. You're living well in a terrible economy to be under 35. Stop complaining, or you'll make yourself a perfect stooge for a can't-miss law school admissions pitch.

To OP, if you are not a lawyer and are indirectly asking whether or not going to law school and becoming a lawyer is a viable alternative, the answer is NO to 99% certainty.

If you want to find out for yourself, study for the LSAT and take the test. Get over 165, have a college GPA better than 3.5, then come back and we can talk more.

Just for clarification, I am a lawyer and this job is somewhat law related but no jd is needed. The company and title look on a resume but that is about all, the work is tedious and boring but so is most work. I just don't like being 27 almost 28 and making 50k while some law friends are making twice my salary

What the fuck is wrong with som of you?

50k at 27 or omeone with a college degree isn't some great feat. I'd say it's decent but a lot depends on the potential in the field and t the current employer.

All of my friends are 26/27 and make way more than 50k. Way more. I'm th schmuck not in that category. Lol

Sme of you are thinking of 50k from a lower clas perspective. I guess that's because you've been so beaten down and dejected that 50k sounds like a fortune. For a professional career 50k is at the very bottom of the range.

Op, you're on the right track but in 5 years 50k isn't going to cut it. Like someone else said, shop around and look for better. Don't limit your search to one city r region ( unless you really have to) . Someone out there will give you more unless you're a total fuck up.

At this point in your life, the potential at an employer and the ability to learn at a quality employer is much more important than the money.

I agree with the above poster. I mean making 50k a year for a lawyer may be a good thing in rural Iowa but not in the nations capital. I accepted the job primarily because of having been unemployed and being on the doc review circuit. I wanted the name of the company on my resume and some steady employment. I know I could make more doing doc review, but despite the low salary, this is just a more respectable job. I think I could have bargained for a higher salary bit I had been unemployed for close to 4 months and my confidence was down
.

50 k at 27 with a jd in a big city simply isn't good enough...but look at the bright side, you work at a reputable company probably alongside a bunch of kids and not doing doc review where you see being bosses around by a paralegal. Tell us where you are when you're 30. Did you go to a good law school and do well?

At least you aren't unemployed and work at a well known company, so stop moaning. Half the people on here are either unemployed or work doc review and haven't had long term employment in years.
