Disagree. I had a friend from law school who did just that. He failed the bar. He later signed with Kaplan and passed. Not worth it. To take the bar, you need to have a tried and true method that works. A method that evaluates trends and provides a program. That covers ground that is relevant. You can try a case pro se or hire a lawyer. The parallel is applicable to bar prep.

I did what triplesix advised for the California bar exam and passed the first time. You're objectively wrong.

I was a bar tutor for Barbri for all UBE jurisdictions, and have also been grading bar review essays using a rubric based on the model answers put out by the state. My price is $30 per essay, and I provide much, much, much more detailed feedback than you get on Barbri essays. I don't want to out myself, but I have very good reviews for this.

If you'd be interested and are buying books, I could probably help you drastically improve your score on the essays for a fraction of the cost.

A friend told me that he used AmeriBar for Maryland and passed after two trials. I am taking Washington State, though I schooled in Virginia. Any advice?

You have to know yourself. I used Barbri for the PA exam because I was a big fan of their daily schedule. I liked being told what to study and when, so I could go to Bar Review, come back to my hole in the wall apartment in Philly and study what they tell me to study. If I just bought the books, then I probably would have freaked out over getting so much information but not having an organized plan to process it all would sink me.

I have also seen people just buy the books and self-study, and pass with ease. I have no clue how they did it, but it definitely can be done. Personally, I would err on the side of taking a course, but I am a conservative guy, so would go with Barbri.

You can make an organized plan without the class. You can get the class schedule from a classmate and follow it if you want.

I am a fan of structure, so I liked Barbri with the scheduled classes and then the HW assignments, but no question people could do that and be fine.

I am blanking on the name, is it PMBR? The one where you take the multi-state exam then spend the next two days going over the thing. I took the practice exam and corrected it. I went to the first review class and had a teacher who sounded exactly like the woman from Office Space who says, "Someone's got a case of the Mondays" I am sure she is a lovely woman, but her voice sounded like nails on a chalkboard, so I bailed at the break and reviewed that on my own, but overall, I like the structure of Barbri.

Personally, I like Fleming's Bar Prep. He has different packages that could work for your budget. The graders/mentors/tutors keep you on track with the schedule you're supposed to follow (If you like that) and they can either chat or Skype with you too.

Check www.lawprepare.com for more information.
