It is a unicorn. Couldn't believe it. Went to law school with him, stalked him on the interweb after seeing his name pop up.
How often does that happen? Unbelievable

Did he get an MBA to improve his position? Was someone sick, he was needed and performed well? Does he speak foreign languages? Did he do something else besides doc review as a staff attorney?

Doesn't seem that marvelous to me. So by age 30-35 he starts at first year treadmill level? Or is it some lateral track deal.

I've seen one doc review to associate but that was prob in '06-07. I think he's also since left as he was still pigeonholed into working on a lot of e-discovery related stuff.

When I was a SA, there were a few SAs who made the jump to associate at other firms. NYC v100. All of them spoke 2 or 3 languages fluently. They are definitely the exception, not the rule.

I know a guy (2013 grad) who made the jump from being an staff attorney at a V30 firm in LA to being a associate there. However, he has fairly good qualifications (T20 law school, just outside of latin honors but EIC of a secondary journal) to begin with, is pretty personable, and seemed to already be doing higher-level work as a staff attorney, so I wasn't terribly surprised about their jump to associate.
