A vent.
Was talking about job prospects with fellow law clerk. Asked if the law clerk is considering firms.

"Only considering Skadden."

Under 50% at his t2. Secondary journal. K-JD. *edit* Already failed the bar several times. Thinks he's getting Skadden bc he knows a few associates there from his graduating class - okay, guess I'm getting Ropes & Grey OR Jones Day, because I know people, of course. But, he adds, he'd would only take the position if he exclusively gets to do pro bono (?!). But, naturally, Skadden is just his second choice. He's aiming for a federal appellate clerkship and he's got a shot because he has less than 1 yr of work experience as a state trial level clerk (lol).

Like... what... Am I in the wrong for thinking he's insane?

Maybe he's an "optimist". I find that it's harder to convince an optimist to view things in a negative light than to convince a pessimist to view things in a positive light.

Fronting is important in their culture. Claims of friends at a law firm who make hiring decisions, is equivalent to saying that his clan is a successful and prominent one. It lets him protect his construction of self-worth, while not being put on the spot to prove his claims. Ultimately he will use the "pro-bono" excuse as his reasoning for why his powerful friends never materialized a job offer for him. He will say that they made him an offer, but not for the 100% pro bono he wanted to do.

A girl from my class made the jump from a state trial court to a federal trial court clerkship. She was number 2 in our class at a T3.

The kid is absolutely delusional. Only exception being if his mom or dad were the General Counsel or CEO of a major client of Skaddens. Then they may bring him on just to do pro bono work.

Some judges have 1 slot they hold for a local T2/T3 every other year or so. The circuit judge in my hometown did that. Every other year he took a top student from the local school which is T3. I am sure that student was top 2. He always took someone from his top 25 alma mater, and that person was typically in the top 5.

Even if the kid got somehow accepted into Skadden, how long would he last? A year at most. problems with other associates, rudeness to staff, no partner to protect him, rejecting work assignments due to being "beneath him", the list is endless. Most likely, he would be canned at first review due to his "superior legal mind".

Good God. I was hoping he'd gone back to coding. Nothing listed under "Clients" and "Settlements" and "Qui nos opprimere velint, illos libenter devoramus" displayed proudly on the home page as some sort of motto... my Latin sucks, but... those who would oppress us, we [will] ... happily... devour? Isn't that from the Addams Family? Is that supposed to be funny?

His entire story should be up on ATL.

If I remember correctly, his first gig out of law school was big law but he was fired soon after starting for being too delusional about his abilities, even by Big law standard.

He sent out some hilarious emails to the firm about his "superior legal mind" being wasted on associate grunt work. He was sooned fired and so he sued. I think it was dismissed or he lost. And that's when I lost the trail.

That's a level of delusion well above average.

He actually thinks associates have any power to determine hiring? Or that they'll risk their reputation to fruitlessly ask their bosses to hire a guy they probably know is delusional and will only make them look bad?
